Welcome to A Father's Pride

A Father's Pride is a resource that links young gay men and their fathers with men who have "been there" and have wisdom and experience to offer the next generation.

By collecting and sharing advice in all areas of life, we support gay youth and their dads, and work toward a shared goal of guiding these young men into happy and successful lives.

A friend of mine, and a friend of the project, shared A Father's Pride on his Facebook page. His words are much more eloquent than mine, and highlight how YOU can make a difference with just a few keystrokes.

Many of us as growing up as gay children did not have close relationships with our parents, particularly our fathers. Our parents may have often felt powerless to help by giving us counsel or advice as their experience growing up was far different from our own.

One of my dear friends has a vision to fill this gap. A gay man with gay sons, he has started a project for gay elders to give loving advice to gay youth. Dating, life skills, relationships, money, any topic is fair game.

Not only is this a way for us as adults to pass along the shared wisdom of our community to gay youth who may just be coming out, but it is a potentially important way for the them to forge a connection with the GLBTs of their parents' generation, those who have "been there, done that" and blazed the trail before them, sharing wisdom to help them successfully blaze their own trail.

I was estranged from my father, and I had no connections to older gay people as a youth coming of age at the height of the AIDS crisis, and in retrospect I feel my life was poorer because of it.

I believe this effort has all of the potential of The Trevor Project or "It Gets Better", and I hope that you'll take a moment to visit www.fatherspride.org and offer your own advice to the next generation of gay youth.

If you have something to share, we want to hear it -- and so do the young men in our lives!
